This residence was built by Thomas Biggs circa 1869.  On June 9, 1873, Biggs sold his 4 1/2 acre "Roundbottom" farm and "dwelling" to Jane R. Howe for $7,525.00.  Situated on the southwest corner of Douglas and Elm Roads, Lot 11 was part of the Gravelotte subdivision, platted by Biggs on June 23, 1873.  Another subdivision was recorded on Sept. 20, 1882.  In 1848 T. R. Biggs owned 72 acres, and the present outline of the house is indicated on the 1873 subdivision map.  The name "Gravelotte" was taken from the nearby quarry where the Little Miami Railroad mined stone for ballast.  This house is among the oldest in Terrace Park.  (Ohio Historic Inventory - 1/1979.)

Charles A. Howe was born February 28, 1836, in Lebanon, N. H., and came to Cincinnati in 1842.  He is a son of Capt. Edward A. and Abigail (Dickinson) Howe, the former of whom was born in 1804., of English extraction, and a descendant of the Potter family which came to America in 1639.  He was a cabinet maker and painter.  

Charles A. received a common-school education.  He was married November 26, 1868 to Miss Jennie Ross, whose father, John Ross, was born in New Jersey, January 10, 1808., and migrated with his parents to Hamilton county in 1812, locating near Cincinnati.  After reaching manhood he engaged in farming, at which he was financially successful.  The mother of Mrs. Howe was Lydia (Valentine) Ross, born in 1820 in Clermont county, Ohio; her parents came to Cincinnati in 1824.  To Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Howe have been born three children: Stanley, Blanche and Perry A., all of whom are at home.  Mr. Howe is one of the reputable and model farmers of Columbia township, living in Terrace Park.  He and his wife attend the Episcopal Church, and politically he affiliates with the Democratic party.
